The Symposium

The symposium “Jóvenes conectados en el aula: prohibir, ignorar o impulsar” is a meeting point between academia, civil society and educational leaders to discuss and provide solutions to the challenges posed by the use of mobile phones (smartphones) in education. This technology has become ubiquitous in our lives, and has become an important part of the daily life of the majority of Spanish youth, but its use within schools has been controversial, with very different political leanings in different Autonomous Communities (prohibition, indiference or promotion).

This event has been organized within the framework of the project “Young people and cellphones in the classroom: Discourses and dynamics of prohibition, promotion and indetermination” (US'MOV, Project PID2019-108041RB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), with the participation of the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Girona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Castilla-La Mancha and the University of Valencia. In the last three years, the project has investigated the use of mobile devices in the classroom from three different perspectives: the views of the administration and experts, the experience of the schools, and the opinions of young people, teachers, and families.

Objectives

Disseminate and discuss the results coming from the US’MOV project.

Offer a space for young people, teachers and families to express their points of view on the issue.

Compare the results of the project with other projects in the field of educational technology, the digitization of education and the challenges they pose for privacy and children’s rights.

Discuss with representatives of institutions related to education, political representatives and the education administration the challenges that mobile phones pose for the future of education.
